King Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a dedication to the death of Mumtaz, while giving birth to her 14th child in Bahanpur. At that time, Shah Jahan was facing a rebellion in the Deccan Plateau. He fought with his troops when Mumtaz died. On the eve of his death, Mumtaz requested that Shah Jahan not remarry and wanted to be honored with a mausoleum. The Taj Mahal is known as a symbol of King Shah Jahan′s love for his wife.
The Taj Mahal mausoleum was built for 11 years, from 1632 to 1643. However, construction continued in the following years to complete other parts of the minaret, mosque, and gate. Reportedly, 1,000 elephants were deployed to transport building materials and more than 20,000 people consisting of laborers, painters, and masons, were employed to complete the mausoleum.
The Taj Mahal or Taj is an architectural object renowned in India for its finest design that combines elements from Indian, Persian and Islamic architectural styles. This historic building was built on the South Bank of the Yamuna River in Agra. It represents the eternal love story of the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to his dear wife Mumtaz Mahal. In 1983 UNESCO placed the Taj Mahal on the list of World Heritage Sites and considered it ″the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of World Heritage″.
The Taj Mahal is a very large mausoleum made of ivory white marble. The building looks like a mosque, a place for a muslim to pray. Once we see it, we will get the impression that the Islamic architectural style is very strong inside the building, starting with the walls and calligraphic decorations on it, the large dome on top of the building along with 4 minarets at each corner of the base wall. The dome is also made of marble with a size of almost 35 meters and the top is decorated with a lotus design. The tower is also decorated with highly detailed lotus motifs.
If we come from the main entrance, we will see a large pool in front of the building, this pool is called the reflecting pool because it will reflect the image of the Taj into the sky. As soon as we enter the building, we will find that there are more decorations on the inner walls. The mausoleum as the main focus of the building is located on the lower floor. The graves of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are positioned next to each other in a large room with Persian-style decoration.
