HIS 101- Western Civilization To 1689
Term Research Paper Guidelines: Due Dates are on the Syllabus
In this course, you will be required to write a 6-8 page typed paper on a significant person, event, or idea in Western Civilization History To 1689. It is expected that you follow these guidelines in writing this paper.
The paper must be typewritten in Microsoft Word.
It must be typed in Times New Roman 12 or Calibri 11 font, double-spaced, with default 1.0″ margins.
Include your full name, title, course information on a separate title page. (Note: this does not count as part of the 6-8 pages!)
Number each page consecutively.
Include an Endnotes citation page in using the Chicago Manual of Style citation method.
Include a bibliography page with full bibliographic source information, including authors, titles, and dates accessed for web articles.
It is expected that you write your paper using correct English grammar and syntax, and that
you use complete sentences placed in paragraph form. Remember in history papers, use
must third person objective, no first person allowed. This is a research paper not a position
paper. So, do not use “I believe” or “my opinion is” type statements.
II. Content: Your paper should be organized and thought out. An example follows.
Note: This is just an example but outlining your paper beforehand will make it easier to write.
1) An introduction.
2) A brief explanation of the origins and history of the subject.
3) A discussion of the importance of the subject and its historical impact.
An analysis how world history has been changed by this person or event.
You may submit the rough draft of your paper in the Dropbox beforehand multiple times to utilize Turnitin. Entitle the final draft as Final Draft so that I will know which one to grade. Your final draft should include your title page, 6-8 pages of your writing with in-text citations, your Endnotes page, and your Bibliography. There is a sample paper in D2L under Content, Term Paper Guidelines to show you what a good history paper looks like using Chicago Manual of Style citations.
III. Sources: The paper should be written using a minimum of five sources, excluding your
textbook. Encyclopedias are not considered appropriate research materials. Your paper must
include a one-page Bibliography. The following format should be used according to Chicago
Manual of Style:
Author, Title, Publisher Information, Date.
If you use internet sites, you must include the exact web address of the source cited along with
the author, title, and date the article was accessed.
Remember, when you use specific source information within your paper, even if you are only
paraphrasing, you must credit that source within the paper. You must use the Chicago Manual
of Style Endnote citation format. (If you are not familiar with this, there are writing guides in the
library or you can go The Chicago Manual of Style). To not credit the source of information within
the paper is considered plagiarism. A good rule of thumb regarding citing sources is if in doubt,
cite the information.
IV. How to turn your paper in: The final copy of your paper must be uploaded into the D2L
Drop-box. A five point reduction of your grade on the assignment will be given for each
day the paper is late. This includes Weekends!
V. Rough Drafts are not required. If you would like to submit one, please contact me no later than
two weeks before the due date.
