Students will examine the role of media and technology in structural inequality, evaluating how and to what extent media and technology create, reproduce, or maintain sexism, heterosexism, racism, ageism, ableism, colonialism, or another form of structural inequality.
You will apply your knowledge of social inequality, power relations, social structures, and social institutions to analyze a form of structural inequality. Using your knowledge from course topics and theories, you will produce an analysis that focuses on media and technology and the (re)production and maintenance of inequality. Choose a form of media that interests you as an entry point to demonstrate your knowledge and skills developed throughout the course.
Acceptable media include news articles, television shows or movies, or social media platforms. The chosen media or technology must include one of the listed forms of structural inequality.
Your analysis must include peer reviewed studies on media, technology, social structure, and social institutions.
Your analytical paper should address the following questions:
How or to what extent does media and technology create, maintain, or reproduce this form of structural inequality? If media and technology play no role, what other factors should be considered?
How do social stratification, social structures or social institutions contribute to this form of structural inequality?
What are the limits of this analytical approach? How can you address these limits?
Your response should include an introduction and conclusion, clear thesis statement, information from course materials and a minimum of two peer reviewed articles. Your thesis should be informed by at least one theoretical perspective from the course. (Structural Functionalism, Symbolic Interactionism, and Conflict Perspective)
