Hi Folks – This is the start of a much bigger project, and we have to begin early so you get the chance to make a lot of the mistakes that I know you′re going to make. It is very important that we get started early here, and I understand that you don′t really know exactly what we′re doing with this yet. But basically, you are going to be creating a 20 question research questionnaire that we are going to fillout with our own ″fake″ data. There′s going to be 10 questions that we come up with together (I will provide to you), and 10 that you come up with on your own. First I′m going to let you give this a shot on your own just to see how difficult it is, and then I′ll provide more guidance. But basically this is a research questionnaire that is based on the research topic that you are interested in working with. So yes this requires that you really start getting a sense of what you would like to do research on, and this will be an evolving project.
Your research questionnaire has to be ten (10) questions long, and focus on your research topic specifically. However, you cannot ask very personal questions (″Are you suicidal?″ ′Have you had an abortion?″) and you cannot eliminate people if the questions do not apply to them (″Do you like eggs? If no, skip the next 10 questions″)/ The questions need to be factual and engage people′s attitudes, opinions, and behaviors without getting too personal. You can ask questions about knowledge (″do you know?″), you can ask thoughts about the past, future, and present, and you can ask opinions (″do you think″, ″do you believe″), you can ask questions about behavior it is appropriate (″how is your sleep?″, ″do you eat breakfast every day?″). Your questions should all revolved around your specific topic, and anyone should be able to answer any one of your questions, in other words, all questions should apply to any person no matter what! Do not ask questions that no one can answer.
Remember to give at least two (2) multiple-choice answers to your questions for each one, and do not leave open response areas. Everything we ask should be reducible to numbers in the end. I’ll explain more in class. Make sure everything is grammatically correct and that the questions make sense. Remember, you can ask about attitudes, opinions, behaviors, experiences, thoughts, feelings, etc., but they just cannot get too personal and they cannot exclude anyone. So you don′t have to be a depressed alcoholic to answer questions about depression and alcoholism. It doesn′t mean that it doesn′t apply to you; it just means that you may have thoughts, feelings, opinions, or behaviors related to the ideas you′re putting out there. You will need to start putting together these questionnaires quickly and you will hand them in to me via the assignment section in PDF format so I can start giving you feedback. OK, any questions please let me know!
